USA Yoga is a non-profit organization committed to developing and promoting Yoga Asana (yoga postures) as a sport.

Yoga Asana competitions originated in India hundreds of years ago and are still being conducted there today. USA Yoga is now bringing this spirit of healthy competition to the United States, where, according to the most recent study by Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance, more than 36 million people practice yoga in the US today. USA Yoga believes that the sport of Yoga Asana will inspire many of these practitioners to improve their practices and encourage many newcomers to take up the practice of yoga and the sport of Yoga Asana.

USA Yoga is developing educational programs, rules and regulations so that the necessary competitive skills can be understood and mastered by competitors, coaches, judges, administrators and yoga studio operators. Successful competitors will need to achieve mastery of physical strength, stamina, balance, flexibility, breath and concentration. Today, USA Yoga sponsors annual regional Yoga Asana competitions as well as a national competition. These competitions are open to competitors from any yoga school or style and all are encouraged to participate. To borrow an ancient phrase, ‘the paths are many, the sport is one.’

Your participation as an athlete, coach, judge, audience member or donor inspires others to practice yoga. With your involvement, you show that Yoga Asana is beneficial for the physical and mental health of all practitioners - children, teens, adults and seniors. You know that Yoga Asana will encourage existing practitioners to sharpen their skills through training, dedication, and devotion to the sport, and will inspire new practitioners to begin a practice which leads to a healthier and happier life. Thank you!

USA Yoga is the exclusive body recognized in the US as the US member federation of the International Yoga Sports Federation.

Nutrition for Yoga Athletes: Plan for Optimal Performance

    2pm ET  (11am PT) Saturday, May 28, 2022

    Free for members

How can you prepare your self, mind, and body for yoga competition? During this interactive Zoom course, Keri Palasz will provide practical advice and flexible guidelines that yoga athletes can use to promote health and wellness through their food selections. The course will encourage participation through online polls and surveys. Attendees will learn nutrition basics, how Olympic athletes use a planned healthy dietary intake pattern as a tool to promote their success, and how to plan their own healthy dietary intake pattern. In addition to a focus on food intake,  proper hydration will also be explained. Attendees will learn how to determine their own hydration needs, and how to maintain proper hydration to optimize both health and performance. When an athlete loses 2% of body weight due to dehydration, physical performance abilities are impaired. For someone weighing 140 pounds, that is a loss of just 2.8 pounds, which many who practice hot yoga can lose in just one 90 minute class. Attendees will leave this course with a template they can use to plan their own healthy dietary intake pattern, a list of suggested reference books written by credible nutrition experts, and inspiration to eat well every day to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to optimize their performance on the national stage in August 2022.
